How Becoming Responds to Signs of a Crisis
Last Updated: September 15, 2026
Becoming is a self-reflection and habit tool for adults dealing with everyday stress, habits and confidence. It does not diagnose, monitor or treat any disease or mental health condition. Zya, the coach in the app, is an AI, not a person. This page explains what the app does when a conversation shows possible signs of a crisis.
IF YOU NEED HELP NOW
Call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, U.S.). Call 911 if you or someone else is in immediate danger.
1. WHAT WE LOOK FOR
Two checks run on every message you send to Zya:
- A check on your device that looks for clear phrases about suicide or self-harm.
- An AI check that looks for signs of: thoughts of suicide or self-harm with intent, sexual violence, danger to a child, or a plan to seriously hurt another person.
If either check finds possible signs of a crisis, the app switches to its crisis response. The checks can miss things and can be wrong, which is why crisis lines are also always available in Settings, Crisis Resources.
A few situations are deliberately not treated as a crisis, so people get a fitting reply instead of a hotline: unwanted intrusive thoughts the person is upset by, grief over someone else's death, and an urge to drink or use again without any mention of wanting to die. For drinking or drug-use urges, the app shows the SAMHSA National Helpline (1-800-662-4357).
2. WHAT YOU SEE
- Zya stops coaching and sends a short, caring message encouraging you to reach out to trained people.
- Below it, tappable crisis lines: Call 988, Text 988, and lines for other countries, plus a link to find a local service.
- Two buttons: "I'm safe right now" and "I need help now". "I need help now" opens findahelpline.com.
- If a crisis came up and was not marked as resolved, the next time you open the chat the app asks how you are before anything else ("I'm okay", "Still struggling", "I need help now").
- If signs of a crisis come up three or more times in 30 days, the app gently suggests finding ongoing support from a professional.
3. WHAT WE RECORD
We record that the crisis response happened, when, and which check triggered it. We do not copy your message into that record. We use these records only to check how well the crisis response works, in aggregate.
4. WHAT WE DO NOT DO
- We do not read your conversations in real time.
- We do not contact you, your family, or emergency services.
- Zya does not provide crisis counseling or therapy.
5. HOW WE KEEP THIS WORKING
We review the crisis checks and resources regularly, test them against example conversations, and update crisis lines when they change.
